Lisandro Martinez Clarifies Man Utd Outburst but Stops Short of Apology

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has issued a statement explaining his criticism of the club’s leadership following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. However, the Argentine defender did not apologise for his remarks, which raised questions about his relationship with the club’s hierarchy.
Martinez had expressed frustration over Manchester United’s summer transfer business after the loss in Madrid. He questioned the club’s ambition and said he expected more from those in charge, specifically mentioning technical director Jason Wilcox and calling for more signings to strengthen the squad.
In a statement shared on Instagram on Wednesday night, Martinez said his post-match comments came from anger and disappointment over the result. He explained that his words reflected his desire to see United return to competing for major trophies.
“After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted,” Martinez said.
The 28-year-old stressed that his expectations were driven by the standards associated with Manchester United. He added that everyone connected to the club must continue to work towards building a stronger team capable of competing at the highest level.
Martinez also accepted that the players had a responsibility to improve their performances. He said he placed himself at the forefront of that responsibility and maintained that progress would require unity, commitment and greater effort from the squad.
Despite his attempt to clarify his position, uncertainty remains over Martinez’s future at Old Trafford. According to Sky Sports News, the club is considering changes to its defence in upcoming transfer windows and has yet to decide whether to extend his contract, which expires next summer. United reportedly have an option to prolong his stay by another year.
The defender’s comments have reportedly caused frustration among some club officials and players, although no decision on possible disciplinary action had been made at the time of the report. Martinez has also been linked with a possible departure, having reportedly pushed for a move to Atletico Madrid during the summer. Manchester United must now manage the situation carefully as discussions over the defender’s future continue.
