Jay-Jay Okocha Names Man City, Barcelona, Bayern as Champions League Favourites, Backs Mbappé for Ballon d’Or

Former Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has named Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as his leading contenders for this season’s UEFA Champions League title. He has also backed Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

Okocha made his predictions during an interview with French publication Le Journal du Dimanche ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s scheduled Champions League meeting with Manchester City on Wednesday. The former PSG midfielder discussed the competition for European club football’s biggest prize and the race for individual honours.

The Nigerian football legend acknowledged that the Ballon d’Or contest remains open, identifying Mbappé, Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal and several PSG players among the leading contenders. He said the number of players in contention had made the race particularly exciting.

However, Okocha believes Mbappé has a strong case for the award because of his goalscoring achievements across major competitions. He pointed to the forward’s reported records in the World Cup, Champions League and Spanish league as reasons he deserves recognition.

“The suspense is more exciting than ever. There are a good half-dozen contenders: Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, the PSG players,” Okocha said.

Explaining his preference, the former Nigeria international added: “I think Mbappé deserves it for having been the top scorer in the World Cup (10 goals), the Champions League (15) and the Spanish league (25).”

For the Champions League, Okocha selected Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as the teams he considers the strongest contenders for the trophy. His choices reflect the clubs’ squad strength, performances and ability to compete at the highest level of European football.

Okocha highlighted Manchester City’s significant spending during the summer transfer window, Barcelona’s impressive performances in the early stages of the season and Bayern Munich’s ability to retain their top players. His selections set up an intriguing contest among three clubs with strong ambitions in Europe.

Okocha’s predictions are his personal assessment of the leading contenders, rather than a guarantee of the eventual winners. Both the Champions League title race and the Ballon d’Or contest will depend on performances as the season progresses.
