Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Gridlocked as Tanker Spills 33,000 Litres of Groundnut Oil

Traffic was disrupted on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday after a tanker carrying 33,000 litres of groundnut oil overturned near Abiola Garden, inward Toll Gate, Lagos.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 2 pm, spilling the tanker’s contents onto the road and causing congestion along the busy expressway. The crash affected the movement of motorists as emergency responders moved to manage the situation.

Following the spill, some residents were seen collecting groundnut oil from the affected area. Their actions took place while authorities worked to secure the scene and coordinate the recovery operation.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police were among the responders deployed to the location. They helped manage traffic and coordinate efforts to address the incident.

Authorities cordoned off the affected section of the road to protect the public and allow the recovery operation to proceed. The presence of the spilled oil and the overturned tanker disrupted normal traffic flow around the scene.

No casualties had been reported as of the time the report was filed. However, traffic remained heavy in the area as responders continued working to manage the incident and recover the tanker safely.

Motorists travelling along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were advised to consider alternative routes to avoid the congestion. The report did not provide further details about the cause of the crash or when traffic would return to normal.
