Arsenal have reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign captain Bruno Guimarães in a deal worth £75 million, with the Brazilian midfielder now set to undergo a medical ahead of completing the transfer.
The 28-year-old has reportedly been granted permission to travel after informing Newcastle earlier this summer that he wanted to join Arsenal if an acceptable offer was received. After an initial bid was rejected, the Premier League champions have now secured an agreement with the Magpies.
Guimarães joined Newcastle from French side Lyon in January 2022 for around £40 million and quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders. During his time at St James’ Park, he made 195 appearances, scored 31 goals, and captained the club through one of its most successful periods in recent years.
The transfer represents another major departure for Newcastle in a busy summer window. Following the sales of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, the club is expected to generate more than £240 million from player sales if Guimarães’ move is completed.
Reports indicate Newcastle were determined to keep their captain but only on their own terms. Club officials are said to have held discussions with the Brazilian in an effort to persuade him to stay, but Guimarães reportedly believed the move to Arsenal represented his best opportunity to compete consistently for major domestic and European trophies.
Unlike previous high-profile transfer sagas, Newcastle sources insist the midfielder handled the process professionally. Guimarães reported to the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain as expected and maintained a respectful relationship with club officials throughout negotiations.
For Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the signing would further strengthen an already formidable midfield featuring Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Ødegaard, Mikel Merino, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Eberechi Eze. Guimarães is widely regarded as one of the league’s most complete midfielders, combining defensive intensity, creativity, technical quality, and leadership.
Should the deal be finalised after his medical, Arsenal will add another proven Premier League performer to a squad already considered among the favourites to challenge for both the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League this season.
