INEC: National Voter Register Hits 103 Million as 2027 Election Preparations Advance

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that Nigeria’s National Register of Voters now contains more than 103 million people, as preparations continue for the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, announced this on Wednesday during a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Amupitan also revealed that the commission had completed nine of the 14 activities outlined in its revised timetable for the 2027 elections.

He said operational readiness assessments were ongoing across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones as the commission continued preparations for the polls.

The chairman further disclosed that INEC was conducting a nationwide Permanent Voter Cards collection exercise across all 774 local government areas.

According to him, collection points had been decentralised to registration areas and wards to make it easier for eligible voters to collect their cards.

Amupitan also announced that the commission had procured 57,000 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices to strengthen its technological capacity ahead of the elections.

He said preparations were also underway for election materials required across the country’s 176,846 polling units, alongside improvements in logistics and early security coordination.

During the meeting, INEC sought further cooperation with the United Kingdom in areas including cybersecurity, electoral personnel training, voter education, strategic communication and efforts to combat disinformation.

Amupitan reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a “free, fair, credible and inclusive 2027 General Election.”
