Fleetwood Town Promise No Fear Against Arsenal Ahead of Carabao Cup Clash

Fleetwood Town manager Matt Lawlor has challenged his players to respect Arsenal without fearing the Premier League giants as the League Two side prepare for one of the biggest matches in their history.

Fleetwood will welcome Arsenal to Highbury Stadium on Tuesday, 27 October, with kick-off scheduled for 8:00 p.m. UK time (9:00 p.m. Nigerian time). The Carabao Cup fourth-round tie will determine which team advances to the quarter-finals.

Lawlor described the occasion as a major moment for the club, its supporters and the wider community. He said Fleetwood had sold out its stadium for the first time in 11 or 12 years, underlining the excitement surrounding the visit of Arsenal.

“It is an amazing night for the club and an amazing night for the fans, the town and the area,” Lawlor told BBC Radio Lancashire.

He added that the opportunity to host the reigning league champions on Fleetwood’s home ground should inspire his players rather than intimidate them.

“The champions are coming to town on our patch and it’s on telly so if you can’t get up for this game you can’t get up for any game,” he said. “The players need to be excited for it but while respect is through the roof, the fear can’t be.”

Fleetwood reached the fourth round after defeating Chesterfield, Shrewsbury and Sheffield United. Their 1–0 victory over Sheffield United in the previous round secured the Lancashire club a meeting with Arsenal, who progressed with a 4–2 win against Ipswich Town.

Lawlor praised his team’s performance against Sheffield United but acknowledged the scale of the challenge posed by Mikel Arteta’s side. He urged his players to reproduce that performance at a much higher level if they hope to cause an upset.

“The performance against Sheffield United was excellent. We need to replicate that times a million tomorrow,” he said.

The Fleetwood manager also praised Arteta’s work at Arsenal, highlighting the Spaniard’s attention to detail, winning mentality and success in establishing a distinctive style of football.

“He has created his own version of football and I could not have any more respect,” Lawlor said. “He does every detail to a very high standard. He is a winner and he has proved that time and time again.”

The tie offers Fleetwood an opportunity to test themselves against elite opposition, while Arsenal will be aiming to avoid a cup upset and maintain their pursuit of another domestic trophy.

For the home side, a passionate crowd and the familiarity of Highbury Stadium could provide an important boost. However, Fleetwood will need a disciplined defensive display, effective use of their opportunities and sustained concentration to trouble Arsenal.

The match is listed for live television coverage on Sky Sports in the United Kingdom. Supporters should check local broadcasters for availability in other countries.
