Reece James Injury: Chelsea Captain Faces Three Months Out After Knee Surgery

Chelsea captain Reece James is expected to spend around three months on the sidelines after undergoing minor surgery for a knee injury sustained during training. The setback could rule the England international out of several important fixtures as Chelsea navigate a demanding run of matches.

The 26-year-old reportedly picked up the injury last Friday, a day before Chelsea secured a 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth. The club confirmed on Friday that the operation was successful and that James had begun rehabilitation with its medical staff. However, Chelsea have not announced an official date for his return.

James is expected to miss a series of high-profile matches, including Premier League encounters against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City. His absence could also affect Chelsea’s preparations for their Carabao Cup meeting with Liverpool.

Chelsea travel to Everton on Saturday before hosting Tottenham on October 24. They are then scheduled to face Liverpool away on October 28, followed by a home fixture against Manchester United on October 31. James is expected to miss this demanding period as he works towards recovery.

The injury represents another setback for the right-back, who has struggled with recurring fitness problems in recent seasons. Despite those challenges, he made 29 Premier League appearances last season, his highest league total since the 2020-21 campaign, and earned selection for England’s World Cup squad.

James has made six appearances for Chelsea this season, including three starts in the Premier League. His availability remains important to the team because of his defensive qualities, leadership and ability to contribute in attack from the right flank.

The defender signed a new six-year contract with Chelsea in March, underlining his long-term commitment to the club. For now, his priority will be completing rehabilitation and returning to full fitness, while Chelsea manage his absence during a busy stretch of domestic fixtures.
