Uzor Arukwe Reveals Why He Has Never Been a Strong Advocate for Marriage

Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has explained why he has never been a strong advocate for marriage, saying women often face greater responsibilities and challenges within the institution.
Arukwe shared his views during an interview on the In My Opinion podcast, where he discussed societal expectations surrounding marriage and the pressure on women to settle down and start families.
The actor pointed to pregnancy, childbirth and the expectation that women take their husbands’ surnames as some of the responsibilities that have shaped his perspective on marriage.
“I’ve never really been an advocate for marriage because I feel like it is more tasking for the woman. She’s the one who bears the children, takes the man’s last name, and has to deal with a lot of things,” Arukwe said.
He added that society was gradually recognising that marriage does not determine a woman’s identity or worth, suggesting that women should not be defined by their marital status.
Reflecting on changing social attitudes, Arukwe recalled how people used to question women who remained unmarried at 25 or 30, often comparing them with others who were already married and had children.
The actor also observed that some women no longer want to have children, saying he had met two or three women who had made that choice. His comments add to the ongoing conversation about marriage, personal decisions and societal expectations placed on women.
