AAU Lecturer Dies in Edo Hotel After Alleged Encounter With 21-Year-Old Sex Worker

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after reportedly collapsing in a hotel room in Ekpoma, Edo State.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, in Esan West Local Government Area. Uwuigbe had reportedly checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old woman identified by police as Angela Defa Jacob.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the lecturer allegedly engaged the services of the woman before sending her out to buy water. When she returned to the room, she reportedly found Uwuigbe lying unresponsive.
Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem confirmed the incident on Tuesday and said three people had been arrested in connection with the case. Those in custody include the hotel owner, the manager and the woman who was with the lecturer.
Ikoedem said the command received a report about the incident at about 8pm on October 5. Police investigators have since commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
Uwuigbe’s body has been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary, according to the police spokesperson. Authorities have not announced a cause of death, with investigations ongoing.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of staff but stressed that the incident occurred outside the university campus.
Aladenika also said the woman involved was not a student of the institution, describing the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of the lecturer’s private life.
The police investigation is expected to establish what led to Uwuigbe’s death and determine whether any criminal liability arose from the incident.
