Thomas Tuchel Recalls Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer to England Squad After World Cup Omissions

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer have earned their way back into the England squad after being left out of the country’s recent World Cup campaign, with manager Thomas Tuchel handing both players a chance to reclaim their international places.

The pair were included in Tuchel’s latest squad for England’s upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures after strong starts to the 2026-27 domestic season. Palmer has scored four goals in six appearances for Chelsea, while Alexander-Arnold has impressed since moving into a more versatile role at Real Madrid.

Palmer’s previous omission came after a difficult campaign disrupted by a groin injury, with Chelsea finishing 10th. Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, had not represented England since June 2025. Their current form has now changed Tuchel’s calculations as England begin a new international campaign.

Tuchel said neither player had done anything wrong when they were previously left out, explaining that the coaching staff had simply preferred other options at the time. He pointed specifically to Palmer’s goals and assists as evidence that the Chelsea forward had returned to his best attacking form.

“They had a good start to the season. They never did something wrong. We just chose different players,” Tuchel said. “But, Cole has his start that he always had but he has his numbers back, he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back so that is why he is in the squad.”

For Alexander-Arnold, Tuchel made it clear that the Real Madrid defender was never permanently removed from England’s plans. The manager said the 27-year-old has played in two positions for his club but will be used as a right-back with the national team.

His recall, however, does not guarantee a starting place. Tuchel said Alexander-Arnold must compete for his position and prove himself during the training camp, pointing to the competition among England’s right-backs.

“I still stick with this decision and it is now time to fight for his place,” Tuchel said. “He always said he is up for a fight … especially for England so it is on him to prove.”

England’s next fixtures will provide an immediate test. Tuchel’s side face Spain on September 26 before travelling to Czechia three days later, followed by a trip to Croatia on October 3 and another home meeting with the Czechs on October 6. The opening clash with Spain will be the first major opportunity for Palmer and Alexander-Arnold to show what they can bring to the new campaign.
