Messi Names 2022 World Cup Final Goal Among Most Special of His Career

Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi has identified his goal in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final against France as one of the strikes that holds the greatest personal significance in his career.

The Argentine football star shared his thoughts during an interview with Spanish news agency EFE in Oviedo on Thursday, explaining that choosing the best goals from his career was particularly difficult.

“It’s extremely hard to choose. If I had to choose two goals that hold a special place in my life, I would probably pick a goal from the 2022 World Cup final, because of what it meant,” Messi said.

Argentina faced France in the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with Messi scoring twice during the match before Argentina won the trophy in a penalty shootout. The victory secured Argentina’s first World Cup title since 1986 and fulfilled Messi’s long-held ambition of winning football’s biggest international prize.

When discussing his time at Barcelona, Messi said he could also select a goal scored in a Champions League final, an El Clásico against Real Madrid or another particularly important match.

“As for Barcelona, I might choose a goal from a Champions League final, an El Clasico, or another particularly important match,” he said.

Messi spent much of his club career at Barcelona, where he established himself as one of the club’s most prolific goalscorers and won major domestic and European honours. His performances in high-profile matches helped define his time at the Spanish club.

The interview highlights the emotional significance Messi attaches to goals beyond their technical quality, particularly those connected to major achievements and memorable moments in his career.
