FG Begins Construction of 120MVA Transmission Substation in Katsina, Targets March 2027 Completion

The Federal Government has commenced construction of a 132/33kV electricity transmission substation in Mashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, with a planned capacity of 120 megavolt-amperes (MVA).
The project, being executed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), is expected to be completed by March 2027. It is aimed at strengthening electricity transmission infrastructure and improving the delivery of available power to Katsina and neighbouring communities.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Mashi on Friday, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the facility would comprise two 60MVA transformers, providing a combined capacity of 120MVA, equivalent to approximately 96 megawatts.
Tegbe said the project was designed to support farmers, traders, artisans and households by improving the transmission network needed for economic activity and better living conditions. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting investments in the power sector.
The minister disclosed that compensation issues affecting the project had been resolved. He urged TCN officials, the contractor and supervising engineers to maintain high standards throughout the construction process, including equipment manufacture, civil works, installation and testing.
“With completion scheduled for March 2027, our focus must be disciplined execution,” Tegbe said, adding that the project should be delivered on schedule without compromising safety or quality.
He also appealed to residents of Mashi to support the construction process, protect the facility from vandalism and report suspicious activities. According to him, the substation is intended to serve the community and future generations.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda welcomed the project, saying the Federal Government had approved three transmission substation projects for the state. He described the investments as important to improving electricity infrastructure and expanding economic opportunities.
Radda also highlighted other planned and ongoing infrastructure projects, including a railway linking Kano, Daura and Katsina, with an extension towards Maradi in Niger Republic. He further disclosed that components for a proposed 10-megawatt hybrid wind and solar power project had arrived in Nigeria. The initiative, he said, involves cooperation between the Federal and Katsina State governments and is intended to strengthen local electricity generation.
