Bruno Fernandes Questions Man United Tactics After 4-1 Defeat to Como as Carrick Stresses Work Rate

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has questioned the team’s tactical approach following a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League, while head coach Michael Carrick stressed the need for greater effort from his players.
The heavy loss has intensified scrutiny of Carrick’s position, with the performance frustrating United’s travelling supporters. According to the report, around 700 fans made the trip to watch the match, and Carrick apologised to them after the final whistle.
The manager’s reaction on the pitch also attracted attention as he crossed towards the supporters and repeatedly raised his hands in their direction. The gesture drew comparisons with former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reaction after a 4-1 defeat to Watford in November 2021, shortly before Solskjaer was dismissed.
However, Fernandes’ post-match comments became a major talking point after the Portuguese midfielder questioned United’s decision not to press Como more aggressively. Speaking to TNT Sports on Wednesday, he suggested that allowing their opponents time on the ball helped them build confidence and control the match.
“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, but sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confidence,” Fernandes said.
Asked whether Carrick had got his tactics wrong, the United captain declined to make a direct accusation but said responsibility for the approach rested with the coaching staff. “That’s on the manager and staff to see it, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable,” he added.
Carrick was later informed of Fernandes’ remarks during his post-match press conference. In response, he emphasised that tactical systems alone could not guarantee success without consistent effort from the players. “There’s a little bit of whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you aren’t going to win,” the manager said.
Although Carrick did not directly name Fernandes, the contrasting comments highlighted different emphases on how United should respond to the defeat. Fernandes focused on pressing intensity and taking greater tactical risks, while Carrick underlined the importance of work rate regardless of the system. Neither man explicitly called for the other to leave, but the exchange is likely to fuel further debate about United’s tactical direction and the relationship between the captain and the coaching staff.
