Chris Brown Gets Suspended Eight-Month Prison Sentence Over London Nightclub Attack

American singer Chris Brown has received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to affray over an attack on music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw at a London nightclub.
Brown was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court in connection with the incident at Tape, a private members’ club in Mayfair, London, in the early hours of February 19, 2023.
His co-defendant, rapper Omololu Akinlolu, also known as HoodyBaby, received a four-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months after pleading guilty to affray. The sentences mean neither man has to enter prison immediately, although a further offence during the suspension period could lead to the suspended term being activated.
Prosecutors described the attack on Diaw as “vicious and unprovoked”. The court heard that the music producer required hospital treatment following the incident.
During the sentencing hearing, the judge said Brown had played a leading role in the attack and took into account his previous convictions involving violence in 2009 and 2013. The judge noted that those convictions were old but relevant to the case.
The court also considered mitigating factors, including Brown’s compliance with bail conditions, his status as a father of four, his employment and his charity work. However, the judge stressed that the singer’s fame and commercial success did not entitle him to special treatment.
Brown’s lawyer, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins, asked the court to consider his remorse and family responsibilities. She described the incident as regrettable and said her client offered a profound apology to those affected.
Court proceedings also included CCTV footage from the nightclub. Prosecutors said the footage showed Brown striking Diaw with a tequila bottle. The judge considered the circumstances of the attack, including the crowded and confined setting.
Akinlolu received a shorter sentence after the prosecution accepted that his level of responsibility was lower than Brown’s. The judge said Akinlolu did not initiate the violence but joined the attack after it had begun, describing his role as significant.
Both men had faced more serious charges, including assault and attempted grievous bodily harm, but those charges were dropped after they pleaded guilty to affray.
Following sentencing, Brown left the court without addressing reporters, although he acknowledged fans outside the building.
The suspended sentences mean both men must comply with the conditions imposed by the court. If either commits another offence during the relevant suspension period, the court may order the suspended prison term to be served, subject to the applicable legal process.
