Granit Xhaka Faces Swiss Investigation Over Alleged Fake Covid Certificate

Switzerland captain and Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka is facing a legal investigation in Switzerland over allegations that he obtained forged Covid-19 certificates, a case that could carry a prison sentence of up to five years if he is convicted.

The investigation has reportedly been opened by the public prosecutor’s office in Lucerne, with Xhaka expected to be questioned in early October, according to French football outlet Foot Mercato.

The case concerns allegations that Xhaka obtained documents that were not genuine during the period when Covid-19 certificates were subject to strict regulations in Switzerland and other European countries.

The development comes as Xhaka, 33, remains one of the most prominent figures in the Switzerland national team. He has also enjoyed a long career in the English Premier League and recently joined Sunderland.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Xhaka has not been found guilty of any offence and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Asked about the investigation after one of his recent matches, Xhaka declined to discuss the matter publicly.

“I have no comment on this. I played football today, and that’s what matters to me now. Nothing at all. I’ve been through worse.”

Xhaka is expected to face questioning as Swiss authorities continue examining the allegations. The investigation will determine whether the matter progresses to further legal proceedings.
