Marvel and Sony have delivered one of the biggest box office openings in cinema history, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day stormed to an estimated $927 million worldwide during its debut weekend.
The superhero blockbuster earned a staggering $355 million across 4,487 North American cinemas, making it the second-highest domestic opening of all time, narrowly behind 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which opened with $357 million. Final figures released on Monday could still see Brand New Day claim the record.
Internationally, the film added another $573 million, underlining Spider-Man’s enduring global appeal and pushing its opening weekend haul close to the coveted $1 billion mark. The only movie to record a bigger worldwide debut remains Avengers: Endgame, which launched with approximately $1.2 billion.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the fourth Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film reportedly cost around $225 million to produce, excluding marketing expenses. The movie has also received widespread praise, earning a 90% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and an ‘A’ CinemaScore from audiences.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige hailed the film’s record-breaking debut, describing it as proof of the lasting connection between Marvel’s characters and moviegoers around the world.
“This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen,” Feige said.
The impressive launch comes at a time when some industry observers had questioned whether superhero films were beginning to lose their appeal following several underperforming Marvel releases in recent years. Instead, Brand New Day appears to have reignited audience enthusiasm by presenting a fresh chapter in Peter Parker’s story after the dramatic ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The film’s success also helped power the biggest collective weekend in box office history. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey remained strong in its third weekend, earning another $51 million, while total ticket sales across all films reached an estimated $430 million, surpassing the previous record set during the release of Avengers: Endgame.
Despite not screening in IMAX cinemas due to The Odyssey occupying those premium screens, Spider-Man: Brand New Day still broke opening weekend records across several premium formats, including Dolby Cinema, 4DX and ScreenX.
Tom Holland’s run as Spider-Man continues to break new ground at the box office. His previous outings—Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home—all enjoyed commercial success, with the latter grossing $1.9 billion worldwide. The latest installment now appears firmly on course to join Hollywood’s billion-dollar club within days.
