Former Manchester City defender John Stones has reportedly agreed a deal to join Italian giants Inter Milan on a free transfer, turning down interest from Premier League clubs Chelsea and Arsenal.
The England international became available after leaving Manchester City at the end of last season, bringing an end to a successful 10-year spell at the club following his £50 million move from Everton in 2016.
Despite struggling with injuries during his final Premier League campaign, Stones reminded fans of his quality during the recent World Cup, where he played a key role for England under manager Thomas Tuchel.
The 32-year-old featured in three matches as the Three Lions reached the semi-finals before suffering a late defeat to eventual runners-up Argentina.
Arsenal had been monitoring Stones as they searched for defensive reinforcements following the news that William Saliba would miss an extended period due to a back injury. Chelsea were also reportedly interested as they looked to add experience and leadership to Xabi Alonso’s squad.
However, reports from Sky Italy indicate that Inter Milan have moved ahead of their Premier League rivals and reached a verbal agreement with the defender on a two-year contract.
Serie A rivals Juventus were also linked with a move for Stones, but Inter are now expected to complete the signing before the end of the week.
The Italian champions have already strengthened their squad this summer with the arrivals of midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic from Club Brugge and goalkeeper Ivan Provedel from Lazio.
Inter are also continuing their search for defensive options and are reportedly interested in Tottenham defender Cristian Romero, who could leave north London after five seasons with the club.
