Hollywood is mourning the loss of rising actress Kaylee Hottle, best known for her role as Jia in the Godzilla vs. Kong film franchise. The 18-year-old actress died following a tragic single-vehicle crash in Frederick County, Maryland, her family has confirmed.
Hottle, who was deaf and communicated through American Sign Language (ASL), captured audiences worldwide with her performance as Jia, the young orphan who shared a unique bond with Kong in the 2021 blockbuster Godzilla vs. Kong. She reprised the role in the 2024 sequel, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Her father, Joshua Hottle, announced her passing in an emotional video statement shared on Facebook using American Sign Language. While expressing gratitude for the support received, the family has asked for privacy as they mourn their loss.
Authorities in Frederick County, Maryland, said the crash happened around 2:50 a.m. on Tuesday in Ijamsville. According to the Sheriff’s Office, investigators believe excessive speed was a contributing factor in the single-vehicle accident. A 19-year-old driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while another passenger was treated at the scene and did not require further medical attention.
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry. Warner Bros., the studio behind the Godzilla and Kong franchise, honoured the young actress in a post on X, sharing a photo of Hottle and celebrating her contribution to the films.
The Texas School for the Deaf, where Hottle was a student, also paid tribute with a heartfelt statement. The school said it was sharing the news “with profound sadness” and extended its condolences to her family, friends, classmates and everyone whose lives she touched. School officials also urged the public to avoid speculation surrounding the circumstances of the crash and to respect the family’s privacy.
Born in the United States, Hottle grew up in a deaf family, with both of her parents communicating through sign language. She attended the Texas School for the Deaf, where she was active in athletics, particularly track and field, alongside other extracurricular activities.
Hottle began her acting career in television commercials before landing her breakthrough role in Godzilla vs. Kong. She also appeared in Magnum P.I. and returned to the monster franchise in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Her performance in the 2024 film earned her a nomination for Best Performance by a Younger Actor at the 52nd Saturn Awards, cementing her reputation as one of Hollywood’s promising young talents.
