Social media personality and self-styled relationship influencer Emmanuel Obruste, popularly known as GehGeh, has come under heavy criticism after videos from his traditional wedding surfaced online, leaving fans and celebrities questioning his long-standing views on marriage.
The ceremony, which took place over the weekend, quickly became one of the biggest talking points on Nigerian social media. Videos showed GehGeh and his bride dressed in matching burgundy traditional attire, while an invitation card identified the couple as Mary and Prosper. Moments from the event, including the traditional first-feeding ceremony, further fueled speculation that the outspoken influencer had tied the knot.
The backlash stems from GehGeh’s previous public statements, where he repeatedly described marriage as a financial burden and advised followers—particularly men—to avoid it. He often encouraged people to have children outside marriage instead of committing to what he called a costly institution.
Among the first celebrities to react was actress Evan Okoro, who jokingly blamed GehGeh for the collapse of her own marriage. In a video shared on Instagram, she expressed shock over the wedding, saying the influencer had convinced many people that marriage was a “scam.”
“GehGeh told us marriage is a financial mistake. He even said if we ever saw him getting married, we should know a woman used juju on him. Now he has left us on the streets and gone to marry. He deceived us,” she said.
Popular comedian Cute Abiola also questioned the authenticity of the wedding, saying GehGeh’s teachings almost influenced him to make life-changing decisions. He later joked that he was grateful he had stopped following the influencer’s relationship advice before becoming “a single father.”
Entertainment blogger Tunde Ednut simply asked, “Wait oo! Is GehGeh married?” while content creators Salo, Tunde Perry, Izzy Ogbeide, Daddy Freeze, and several others joined the conversation with humorous reactions across social media.
Perhaps the strongest reaction came from streamer Carter Efe, who accused GehGeh of ruining his 12-year relationship. In an emotional video that has since gone viral, Carter claimed he ended the relationship after taking GehGeh’s advice against marriage, only to discover that the influencer had secretly held his own traditional wedding.
Facing mounting criticism, GehGeh denied ever telling people not to get married. Responding on X, he challenged critics to produce any video where he explicitly discouraged marriage.
“I never for once told y’all not to get married. Did I? If yes, show me a video of me telling you not to marry,” he wrote.
He also argued that many Nigerians misunderstand how content creation works on social media, suggesting that his online persona should not always be interpreted as personal belief.
Whether the ceremony was his own wedding or, as he claimed, an event he attended on behalf of his brother abroad, the controversy has reignited conversations about the influence of online personalities and the responsibility that comes with giving relationship advice to millions of followers.
