Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet after signalling his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State.
Adelabu reportedly met President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday night, where he submitted a detailed performance report and formally communicated his political ambition.
According to a statement from his office, the minister also informed the president of his plan to seek the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, a move that received presidential consent.
His resignation is expected to take effect in the coming days, marking the end of a tenure that began with his appointment as Minister of Power under the current administration.
During the meeting, Adelabu presented a comprehensive review of his stewardship in the power sector over the past two and a half years, highlighting reforms and ongoing projects aimed at improving electricity supply across the country.
His media aide, Bolaji Tunji, said the minister outlined progress made in stabilising power generation, strengthening transmission infrastructure, and improving efficiency across the electricity value chain.
The statement noted that Tinubu commended Adelabu for his efforts, particularly in laying what was described as a policy foundation for long-term transformation of the power sector.
A key highlight of the engagement was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), alongside a medium to long-term resource plan for the sector.
The NIEP is designed as a long-term framework to expand electricity access, attract investment, integrate renewable energy, and strengthen the overall resilience of Nigeria’s power system.
Its accompanying Strategic Implementation Plan is intended to translate policy goals into actionable steps, assigning responsibilities and timelines across generation, transmission, and distribution segments.
Despite ongoing challenges in the sector, including gas supply constraints and infrastructure limitations, the minister maintained that reforms remain on track to improve electricity delivery nationwide.
The statement added that Tinubu granted approval for Adelabu’s political ambition, clearing the way for his expected exit from the Federal Executive Council.
Adelabu also expressed appreciation to the president for his support and reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s broader development agenda as he prepares for a return to partisan politics in Oyo State.
