A senior non-commissioned officer at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja has died following a shooting incident at the facility.
The incident occurred at about 9:37am on Monday, September 7, 2026, while personnel were on duty at the custodial centre.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported that the officer allegedly fired at his commanding officer during the incident but missed after the commander moved away.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, with authorities expected to establish what led to the confrontation and subsequent gunfire.
Makama reported that the senior officer was later found with a gunshot injury and died from the injury.
His remains were subsequently evacuated to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, UATH, for further action.
An investigation has reportedly been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish the events that preceded the shooting.
The incident adds to security concerns surrounding personnel and operations within custodial facilities, with further details expected as the investigation progresses.
