Tensions are rising ahead of the 2027 general elections as former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, publicly declared plans to mobilise against Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former Kano State governor, in a video that has since circulated widely on social media.

Dokubo’s comments come at a time of heightened political realignments, following reports that Kwankwaso has been urging supporters to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after his exit from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

In the video, Dokubo accused Kwankwaso of attempting to mislead Muslim voters and vowed to play an active role in campaigning against him during the next election cycle.

He also expressed confidence that voters in Kano State would reject the former governor at the polls, suggesting that political dynamics in the North could shift significantly in 2027.

“I will be at the forefront of campaigning against Rabiu Kwankwaso in the 2027 election. He thinks he can sell Muslims for kobo kobo… Kano will surprise you this time, but we are going to disappoint him,” Dokubo said.

The former militant leader further alleged that Kwankwaso’s political moves were aimed at manipulating public sentiment, though he did not provide evidence to support the claim.

Kwankwaso’s recent political transition has already triggered fresh activity within opposition circles, with early consultations and counter-strategies emerging as parties position themselves ahead of the next general elections.

His shift away from the NNPP and reported alignment with the ADC has added a new layer of uncertainty to opposition politics, particularly in the North-West region where he remains a significant political figure.

As of the time of filing this report, Rabiu Kwankwaso has not issued any public response to Dokubo’s comments.
