Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez has brushed aside criticism of his performances for Rangers, insisting he is focused on improving rather than worrying about what is being said about him.
Fernandez enjoyed an outstanding first season after joining Rangers from Peterborough United, winning the club’s Men’s Player of the Season award and earning a place in the PFA Scotland Team of the Season.
His form has dipped at the start of the 2026–27 campaign, however, with the centre-back coming under increased scrutiny following Rangers’ disappointing Europa League qualifying exit.
Rangers’ elimination also ended the club’s run of European football dating back to 2017, adding pressure on the squad as it targets domestic success this season.
Speaking ahead of Rangers’ Scottish Premiership meeting with St Mirren, Fernandez said criticism does not influence his approach.
“I don’t really look into what is said about me. I just try to focus on myself and try to improve to be better,” the Nigerian defender said, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
Fernandez acknowledged that there are areas of his game that require improvement, particularly concentration during key moments of matches.
“Every day I want to be better, and I know when something I’ve done is bad, and I know that I need to improve on it,” he said, adding that he remains confident he will continue to develop as a player.
The defender also pointed to the importance of limiting mistakes that can give opponents opportunities. He said Rangers have been discussing concentration and the small details that can ultimately lead to goals or dangerous attacks.
Rangers have responded to their difficult start by winning their last three matches, with Fernandez saying the squad’s unity has also improved despite the disappointment of missing out on European competition.
The Nigerian said manager Russell Martin had reminded the players that three domestic trophies remain available, giving the team something to fight for as it attempts to turn its season around.
Fernandez will now hope to maintain his improved form when Rangers host St Mirren, with the club targeting a fourth consecutive victory.
