Global sport’s biggest names gathered in Madrid for the 2026 Laureus World Sports Awards, a night that celebrated excellence across disciplines and crowned the standout performers of the past year in what is often described as the “Oscars of sport.”

Tennis took centre stage as Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka claimed the top individual honours, reinforcing their dominance on the global stage after exceptional seasons.

Among younger talents, Lamine Yamal was named Young Sportsperson of the Year, underlining his rapid rise as one of football’s most exciting prospects. Speaking after receiving the award, Yamal paid tribute to Messi, describing him as a defining influence and expressing hope of following a similar path.

Other winners included Gabriel Araújo as Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability, Chloe Kim as Action Sportsperson of the Year, and Toni Kroos, who received the Sporting Inspiration Award.
