Panic swept through commuters on Monday morning, April 7, 2025, after a private vehicle carrying four people plunged off the notorious Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The incident occurred around 7:15 AM, triggering a massive traffic gridlock and drawing alarmed passersby to the scene.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle somersaulted off the bridge after the driver appeared to lose control while navigating the bend inward Berger. Emergency responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other rescue agencies arrived swiftly, pulling the driver and three passengers from the wreckage with varying degrees of injuries.
LASTMA confirmed the crash on its official X handle, stating, “Report of an accident of a car that fell from Otedola Bridge. The driver has been rescued and taken to the nearby hospital. Other occupants were also evacuated for medical attention.” Their update also warned of traffic congestion stretching from Otedola to the Secretariat axis, as officers worked to clear the wreck and restore order.
Medical officials at the nearby Lagos State Emergency Hospital in Ikeja revealed that all victims are currently undergoing treatment. None of the injuries have been classified as fatal, but trauma assessments are ongoing. Authorities are yet to release the identities of those involved, pending family notification.
The crash took place dangerously close to the same section of the bridge where a gas-laden truck exploded just weeks ago, killing at least six people and damaging multiple vehicles. Monday’s incident has reignited public concern over the safety of the high-traffic bridge, which has seen repeated accidents in recent years.
Calls are now growing for the Lagos State Government to fast-track safety enhancements, including reinforced guard rails, visible hazard signage, and stricter speed enforcement measures along the bridge. Residents and road users alike are demanding answers to why such a critical section of infrastructure remains prone to catastrophic incidents.
As investigations continue, LASTMA has advised drivers to remain cautious and observe speed limits when approaching the bridge. Meanwhile, traffic remains heavy along the affected route, and alternate roads are being recommended for motorists heading toward Ikeja and Victoria Island.
