IMSU expels 60 students

The management of Imo State University (IMSU) Owerri has expelled about 6o students of the institution including those in final year for making below 1.00 grade points.
Those who made above 1.00 but below 1.5 grade points for the 2011/2012 session were asked to repeat class.
The policy is said to be new one introduced by the acting Vice Chancellor of the institution.

When Nigeria Newspoint visited faculty of Humanities of the institution anxious students who wanted to know their fate were seen rushing to the faculty’s notice board to know if they were still students or not.
But those who were expelled and the ones asked to repeat classes were seen weeping.
Some of the students who were asked to withdraw from the school who are in final year of their academic programmes were crying that after four years of being in the university, the school management has frustrated their lives.
A female student who was a victim of this new policy (name withheld) said that her family will disown her if it gets the report.
While some students commended the authority for the new policy, majority condemned it, saying that it is a wicked act.
The students argued that the notice came too late as the institution has already started exams.
They maintained that the school management should rescind the decision to allow everybody to continue, saying that it is at the detriment of any student who graduates with poor result.
Meanwhile source close to the acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, told Nigeria Newspoint that Prof. Awuzie and the senate of the school initiated the measure in order to encourage seriousness.
The source hinted that Prof. Awuzie wants to make sure that IMSU regains its position as one of the best universities in the country.
He opined that the society will not be better if schools continue to graduate students who cannot defend their certificates, saying that in Prof. Awuzie’s leadership, students of IMSU must work hard to learn and merit their certificates.
