Commercial motorcyclists across Kogi State will be required to wear reflective jackets with unique serial numbers and carry valid identification cards from July 1, 2026, as the police step up efforts to improve security and rider identification.
The Kogi State Police Command announced the directive as part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening public safety and making it easier to trace commercial motorcycle operators across the state.
In a statement issued in Lokoja, Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said all commercial motorcyclists must comply with the new requirements while conducting their daily operations.
Under the new system, reflective jackets will be colour-coded according to the state’s three senatorial districts. Riders operating in Kogi Central Senatorial District will wear yellow jackets, those in Kogi West will use blue jackets, while commercial motorcyclists in Kogi East will be identified with red jackets.
The command explained that the initiative is designed to enhance accountability among operators and assist security agencies in tracking suspects when criminal incidents occur.
Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state to ensure strict implementation of the policy. He also instructed officers to carry out enforcement professionally and respect the rights of citizens.
The police chief warned personnel against harassing or extorting commercial motorcyclists during the exercise, stressing that any officer found engaging in misconduct would face appropriate sanctions.
The command further stated that any rider who fails to comply with the directive will be arrested, while the motorcycle involved will be impounded until all requirements are met.
Residents were also encouraged to take note of the serial numbers and identification details of commercial motorcyclists they patronise, noting that such information could prove useful during investigations and other security-related situations.
