The Imo State Police Command has arrested three students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) in connection with the death of a 100-level undergraduate who allegedly died after being assaulted over an accusation of theft.
The deceased, identified as Christogonus Chinedu Chibuzo, a 21-year-old Cyber Security student and member of the university’s Man O’ War organisation, reportedly died under suspicious circumstances on May 30, 2026.
Police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, disclosed in a statement that preliminary investigations revealed the student was allegedly subjected to severe assault by some members of the group after being accused of stealing N13,500.
The suspects arrested in connection with the incident are Benedict Chukwuemeka (21), Gospel Kelechi Ikenna (24), and Anastasia Obioma (21), all said to be 500-level students of the institution. They are currently in police custody as investigations continue.
According to the police, initial findings suggest that the victim was restrained and physically assaulted, leading to serious injuries. He was later rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
Following a report of the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Audu Garba Bosso, ordered an immediate response, resulting in the swift arrest of the three suspects. Authorities also secured relevant evidence linked to the case.
“The corpse has been deposited in the morgue for preservation and autopsy,” Okoye stated, adding that investigators are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
To ensure a thorough investigation, the police commissioner has transferred the matter to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Owerri, for further examination. He also directed investigators to identify and question every individual connected to the incident.
The Imo State Police Command has assured the victim’s family, the FUTO community, and the public that no stone will be left unturned in the pursuit of justice. The command reiterated its commitment to uncovering the facts surrounding the tragedy and holding anyone found culpable accountable under the law.
