A suspected cybercrime fugitive being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has died following a reported gun battle involving security operatives and suspected cult members in Makurdi, Benue State.

The deceased, identified as Atser Sesugh, was among three suspects earlier arrested by the EFCC over alleged internet fraud and related offences before reportedly escaping from custody earlier this month.

Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, said Sesugh, alongside James Onuh and Solomon Aondoakura Orhena, allegedly escaped from EFCC custody on May 4 after their arrest on April 28, 2026.

Police operatives later received intelligence that the fleeing suspects had resurfaced around a hideout behind the Mechanic Village area in Kanshio, Makurdi. Acting on the information, security personnel reportedly moved into the area at about 3pm on Thursday in an attempt to apprehend the suspects.

According to the police, the operation turned violent after suspected cult members allegedly opened fire on the operatives, triggering a gun exchange that caused panic within the area before the attackers fled.

Edet explained that while officers were withdrawing from the scene, Sesugh was found lying critically injured by the roadside.

“He was immediately rushed to the Police Cottage Hospital, Makurdi, where he was confirmed dead,” the police spokesperson stated.

Authorities said the body has been deposited at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Benue State Commissioner of Police has reportedly directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department to carry out a full investigation, while security agencies intensify efforts to locate and arrest the remaining fugitives.
