Shock and sorrow still weigh heavily on the Omatu family after three brothers lost their lives in the catastrophic fire that tore through the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on 24 December 2025.
The victims — Stephen Onyeka (50), Casmir Nnabuike (39) and Collins Kenechukwu (37) — hailed from Ihiala in Anambra State. They had travelled to Lagos in search of better opportunities and were conducting business inside the commercial complex when the blaze erupted.
Witnesses described a frantic scramble for safety as flames spread rapidly, sending thick smoke billowing through rows of offices, warehouses and shops. Many occupants struggled to escape before firefighters gained control of the inferno.
The Omatu brothers were among those trapped. Their remains were later recovered from the scene.
The tragedy has reignited public debate about fire safety, enforcement of building regulations and emergency preparedness across Lagos’ busy trading hubs — areas where repeated incidents have claimed lives and destroyed livelihoods.
Relatives and friends say the brothers were hardworking and deeply committed to supporting their family both at home and in their community. Condolence messages have continued to pour in from across Anambra and beyond, while churches, youth groups and community associations in Ihiala have held prayer sessions in their memory.
A service of songs was held on 7 January at Jesus the Saviour Catholic Church, Bucknor Ejigbo, Lagos.
The family has confirmed that the three brothers will be laid to rest on 14 January 2026 in their hometown of Ihiala. Preparations are underway, with mourners travelling from different parts of the country to pay their final respects. Traditional leaders and representatives of various associations are also expected to attend the funeral rites.
