Peter Obi Meets EU Ambassadors, Seeks International Support for Nigeria’s Democracy Ahead of 2027 Elections

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has met with ambassadors of European Union (EU) member countries in Abuja, appealing for international support for Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi disclosed the meeting in a post on his X account on Friday, saying the engagement took place on Thursday, a day after his meeting with the British High Commissioner.
According to the former Anambra State governor, discussions centred on the rising cost of living, the welfare of Nigerians, governance and preparations for the forthcoming general elections.
He said he used the opportunity to urge the international community to support Nigerians in protecting their democratic rights, particularly their freedom to elect leaders of their choice in a peaceful and fair environment.
Obi stressed that democracy depends on respecting the choices of citizens and allowing them to determine who governs them.
“I reiterated my appeal to the international community to support the democratic right of Nigerians to freely and fairly choose their leaders in a peaceful environment.
“The international community should stand with the Nigerian people in defending this fundamental right.
“The very essence of democracy is respect for the right of citizens to freely make their choices and determine who governs them,” he wrote.
The NDC presidential candidate also expressed appreciation to the European Union Commission for the invitation and opportunity to engage with the ambassadors.
The meeting comes as political activities and diplomatic engagements gather momentum ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
