Magixx Says Nigerian Artistes Need International Hits to Make Serious Money

Afrobeats singer Magixx has argued that Nigerian artistes need songs with international appeal to make substantial money from the music industry, particularly after securing their first major hit.
Speaking on an episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the Mavin Records artiste explained that securing a record deal does not automatically translate into financial stability.
He said artistes must consistently release successful songs after their first hit to maintain their earnings and remain financially relevant.
Magixx disclosed that even after signing with Mavin Records under music executive Don Jazzy, it took him between two and three months to start earning money from music.
According to him, he struggled to meet bills and family responsibilities during that period, despite being signed to a major record label.
The singer also recalled the pressure of maintaining the lifestyle expected of a rising superstar, including spending on expensive designer clothing, while people around him assumed his record deal meant he was already financially comfortable.
He said the situation became particularly difficult when he sought financial assistance because some people believed his association with a major label meant he should not have money problems.
Magixx further explained that an artiste’s performance fee is often influenced by the number of hit songs in their catalogue.
Using his experience to illustrate the point, he said one hit song could earn an artiste between N500,000 and N700,000 per show, while another successful record could increase the performance fee to about N1.5 million.
His comments highlight the financial realities behind the music industry, where record deals and public recognition do not necessarily guarantee immediate wealth.
