Fire Destroys Goods Worth Millions of Naira in Ibadan’s Gbagi Market, Eight Shops Affected

Goods and household items worth millions of naira have been destroyed after a fire outbreak affected several shops at Gbagi Market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The fire occurred on Thursday night, October 29, 2026, at the market located along the Ibadan-Ife Expressway.
At least eight shops were affected by the inferno, according to the Oyo State Fire Service.
The chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement made available on Friday morning. He disclosed that no life was lost in the outbreak.
Akinwande said firefighters arrived at the scene to find several shops engulfed in flames, with thick smoke spreading through the affected section of the market.
He said the agency’s timely intervention prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the market, thereby limiting further damage to property.
However, the fire service chairman identified illegal structures and goods obstructing access roads within the market as major challenges faced by firefighters during the operation.
According to him, the obstructions made it difficult for firefighting trucks to gain free access to the affected area, highlighting concerns about emergency access within the busy commercial centre.
The authorities have not disclosed the cause of the fire or provided a detailed assessment of the total financial losses recorded by traders.
