Nigeria Wins Bid to Host 2028 ITTF Africa Table Tennis Championships in Lagos

Nigeria has won the right to host the 2028 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa Championships after defeating Tunisia in a vote at the continental body’s annual general meeting in Tangier, Morocco.

The decision followed a contest between the two countries for the hosting rights to the tournament, regarded as one of Africa’s premier table tennis competitions. Delegates voted to determine the host after other venues for the 2027 and 2028 events had been announced.

A total of 38 votes were certified, comprising 31 delegates who attended physically and seven who voted by proxy. Nigeria secured 23 votes, while Tunisia received 15, giving the Nigerian bid a clear majority.

The President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Adesoji Tayo, welcomed the outcome, thanking delegates for their confidence in the country and promising a high-quality tournament.

“We want to thank all the delegates for putting their trust in Nigeria to host a befitting tournament in 2028 as well as the African Para Championships in 2027,” Tayo said.

He added that Nigeria was prepared to use its experience in organising major table tennis competitions to deliver a smooth event and attract more visitors.

“The city of Lagos will again witness the best of table tennis, and we assure all our visitors that Nigeria will be the place to be in 2028,” he said.

Nigeria is also scheduled to host the African Para Championships in 2027. Other hosting allocations for that year include Libya for the Cup, Algeria for the Championships and Botswana for the Youth event.

For 2028, Rwanda has been allocated the Youth event, while Egypt will host the Para Championships. The host nation for the 2028 Cup is yet to be decided.
