Two Killed While Inspecting Land in Irete, Imo as Police Launch Security Operation

Two people have been killed by suspected armed bandits while inspecting a parcel of land in Irete Community, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, prompting the police to deploy additional security personnel to the area.

The victims were reportedly among four people who visited the area on Monday, September 14, to inspect land offered for sale. A community source said the attackers allegedly opened fire on the group, killing two people while the other two, including a woman, escaped and raised the alarm.

One of those killed was identified as Chigaemezu Ozuzu, a member of a local vigilante group. The circumstances surrounding the attack and the identities of the other victim have not been officially disclosed.

The incident has heightened concerns among residents of Irete and surrounding communities. A community source alleged that suspected herders had been causing security concerns in the area and neighbouring communities, with some farmers reportedly abandoning their farmlands because of fear.

Confirming the attack, Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, said Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso had ordered an immediate increase in security operations around Irete and other affected communities.

Okoye said the deployment followed recent security concerns, including reported cases of kidnapping and other criminal activities in Owerri West and Oguta Local Government Areas. The operation covers Irete, Ejemekuru, Ogbakwu, Izombe, Umuguma, Okuku, Ndegwu, Amakohia-Ubi and adjoining communities.

The police Anti-Kidnapping Unit and Violent Crime Response Unit have been deployed with available operational assets, working alongside community vigilantes. Police said the teams would intensify intelligence-led operations and pursue those responsible for the attack.

Commissioner Bosso condemned the killing and directed the deployed personnel to identify and arrest the perpetrators. He also charged the operatives to remain vigilant and work with local stakeholders to prevent criminal groups from establishing a foothold in the affected communities.
