Tinubu Travels to Saudi Arabia for Umrah, Prays for Nigeria Amid Security Concerns

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has travelled to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to perform Umrah, the lesser Hajj pilgrimage, with prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity and continued progress.

According to a statement by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the visit will provide the 74-year-old president with an opportunity for spiritual reflection and devotion while seeking divine guidance for the country.

Onanuga said Tinubu would perform the religious rites associated with Umrah and pray for Nigeria and its people.

Tinubu’s media aide, Olusegun Dada, also dismissed speculation that the trip was primarily intended for medical checks, insisting that the president’s journey was religious in nature.

In a post on X, Dada said the president intended to offer prayers for the country and commit his re-election bid to God as he embarked on another major political journey. He noted that Tinubu last performed Umrah in 2022, ahead of the APC presidential primary that preceded his election as president.

The trip comes amid public discussion about the president’s health following a viral video from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign launch. The footage appeared to show First Lady Oluremi Tinubu placing something in the president’s mouth. The supplied report said there had been no official comment on the incident.

Umrah is a pilgrimage to Mecca that can be performed at any time of the year and involves a shorter set of religious rites than Hajj. Hajj, by contrast, takes place on fixed dates annually and is a religious obligation for Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake it at least once in their lifetime.

Tinubu’s visit also comes as Nigeria prepares for another election cycle, with security and economic conditions emerging as major political issues. The country continues to face multiple security challenges, including Islamist insurgency, kidnappings and attacks by criminal gangs commonly known as bandits, land-related clashes and separatist unrest.

The president’s administration is expected to face scrutiny over its handling of these challenges as political campaigning progresses. Tinubu’s stated purpose for the pilgrimage, however, is to seek spiritual guidance and pray for Nigeria’s stability and development.
