The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has officially fixed Saturday, September 26, 2026, for elections into the 27 Local Government Area chairmanship positions and 305 ward councillorship seats across the state.
The commission made the announcement in a press release dated September 11, 2026, signed by its Chairman, Chief Charles Ejiogu, JP.
According to the statement, voting will take place across 4,758 polling units in Imo State. The election will determine the next chairmen of the state’s 27 local government areas as well as councillors representing the wards.
ISIEC said the election date is in line with its “360 days” Notice of Election issued on September 18, 2025, pursuant to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.
The commission directed all registered political parties to take note of the confirmed date and make the necessary preparations ahead of the poll.
ISIEC also stated that consultations with critical stakeholders are still ongoing as preparations for the election continue.
The September 26 poll will cover all 27 local government areas and 305 wards in the state. The commission’s announcement now formally puts the election date on record following months of preparations for the local government elections.
The notice was signed by Chief Charles Ejiogu at the commission’s headquarters on Orlu Road, Owerri, and addressed to critical stakeholders, particularly registered political parties and the general public.
