APC Wins Four of Five Bye-Elections in Delta, Kano, Bauchi and Gombe
The All Progressives Congress (APC) won four of the five legislative bye-elections held across Delta, Kano, Bauchi and Gombe states on Saturday, September 19, while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) secured the remaining seat in Bauchi. The polls covered one federal constituency and four state constituencies.
In Delta State, APC candidate Ator Okolosi won the Udu State Constituency election with 8,724 votes. He defeated PDP candidate George Orugbo, who polled 212 votes, while APM candidate Omovie Esther received 33 votes.
The APC also secured victory in Kano State, where Husseini Yusuf Datti won the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency bye-election with 22,890 votes. The PDP recorded 180 votes, while the PRP, APP and Labour Party polled 270, 53 and 39 votes respectively.
In Gombe State, APC candidate Usman Maijama’a Kallamu won the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency seat with 41,121 votes. The Labour Party scored 3,553 votes, while the APM and NNPP recorded 872 and 707 votes respectively. INEC said 47,301 votes were cast, with 46,551 declared valid and 750 rejected.
The two contests in Bauchi State produced different outcomes. APC candidate Yakubu Ali won the Disina State Constituency with 5,846 votes against APM’s 5,225, while APM candidate Adamu Yakubu won the Sakwa State Constituency with 8,515 votes. The APC candidate in Sakwa polled 3,771 votes.
The vacancies arose from different circumstances, including the deaths of sitting lawmakers and a resignation to contest a local government chairmanship election. INEC said the bye-elections would provide operational lessons ahead of the 2027 general elections.
APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda congratulated the party’s four successful candidates and commended INEC, security agencies and other stakeholders involved in the elections. He urged the winners to see their victories as a call to service and remain committed to their constituents.
Meanwhile, Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo said the geographical spread of the APC victories was significant ahead of the 2027 elections. That is Keyamo’s political interpretation of the results, rather than an official assessment of what the bye-election outcomes mean for the next general election. INEC’s official calendar currently schedules the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027.
