Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the release of ₦300 million to support couples participating in the state’s Hisbah Mass Wedding Scheme, with each bride set to receive ₦200,000 alongside household items for newly married families.
The financial intervention is aimed at easing the cost of marriage and helping beneficiaries begin married life on a stronger financial footing. The initiative also includes the distribution of furniture, clothing and food items to support the couples as they establish their homes.
The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, announced the governor’s approval on Thursday during a pre-marital orientation programme held at the Coronation Hall of the Government House in Kano.
According to Daurawa, the ₦200,000 allocated to each bride will cover dowry expenses and serve as start-up capital. He explained that the funds would be paid directly into the beneficiaries’ individual bank accounts after they complete the account opening process.
Beyond the cash support, the state government will provide household furniture for every couple. Each groom will also receive 10 yards of fabric, a cap, a pair of shoes and food items, in line with Governor Yusuf’s directive.
Daurawa said the programme is designed to reduce the financial burden often associated with marriage while giving couples the resources they need to build stable families. He also announced that the state government would host a grand wedding reception for the beneficiaries on Saturday at the Government House.
The reception is expected to attract prominent Islamic scholars from across Nigeria, who will offer prayers and blessings for the newlyweds. The Hisbah commander encouraged prospective husbands to treat their wives with love, fairness and responsibility, while urging brides to remain patient and supportive as they begin married life.
He further emphasised the importance of resolving marital disputes through dialogue rather than separation. According to Daurawa, the Hisbah Board encourages mediation before divorce proceedings and called on beneficiaries from previous editions of the mass wedding programme to attend Saturday’s ceremony to encourage the new couples and strengthen the initiative’s objectives.
