Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa has backed Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey to become a leader at the Premier League club, while explaining why the Super Eagles star fits his tactical approach so well.
Arbeloa praised Bassey after Fulham ended their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 victory over Stuttgart at Craven Cottage on Saturday. The Nigerian produced a strong defensive display as Fulham kept a clean sheet in their final preparation match.
The Fulham manager said Bassey’s pace, defensive ability and comfort in covering large spaces make him particularly suited to his high defensive line. The tactical demands require defenders who can cope with significant space behind them when the team pushes forward.
“Calvin is a proper and top player for my style of game because we need to defend so high and leave a lot of space behind. He has everything,” Arbeloa told Fulham media.
The former Real Madrid defender also highlighted Bassey’s personality and work ethic, suggesting that the Nigerian has qualities that could eventually make him a dressing-room leader.
“He is a humorous individual, but when it’s time to work, he is always the first to step up. I have great admiration for Calvin, and he has the potential to be our leader,” Arbeloa added.
Bassey has established himself as an important player for Fulham since joining the club in the summer of 2023 after his spell with Ajax. His time in the Netherlands was inconsistent, but the defender has rebuilt his reputation in the Premier League through regular appearances and strong defensive performances.
The 25-year-old has now made 101 appearances for Fulham across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing one assist. Arbeloa’s comments suggest the Nigerian could have an even greater role as Fulham begin the new campaign.
For Bassey, the challenge now is to turn the manager’s confidence into consistent performances when competitive football begins. If he can maintain his defensive form and take on greater responsibility within the squad, a leadership role could become a realistic next step.
