Fears of a possible mass abduction in Edo North have forced the Edo State Government to temporarily close three public secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School. The decision follows a security alert reportedly issued by the Department of State Services (DSS) concerning threats targeting school children in the area.

Details of the closure were contained in a circular dated June 9, 2026, issued by the Edo State Ministry of Education and addressed to the principals of the affected schools. The directive was signed by Enodolomwanyi Otamere on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the ministry.

According to the ministry, intelligence reports from relevant security agencies pointed to credible threats against students, teachers, and school communities in parts of Akoko-Edo. The government said the temporary shutdown was necessary to protect lives and prevent any security breach.

“Consequently, and in line with the Government’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, approval has been granted for the temporary closure of the affected schools with immediate effect,” the circular stated.

The ministry announced the suspension of all academic and non-academic activities in the three schools until further notice. However, students currently writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will still be allowed access to sit for their papers.

Officials said special security arrangements would be put in place for examination candidates. Security agencies and community stakeholders are expected to provide supervision to ensure the safety of students during the examination period.

School principals have been directed to ensure the orderly release of students to their parents and guardians. They were also instructed to secure school facilities, safeguard government property, and maintain regular communication with education authorities and security agencies throughout the closure period.

The Edo State Government appealed to parents, guardians, and residents of the affected communities to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel. Authorities said efforts were being intensified to address the security concerns and create conditions for the safe resumption of academic activities as soon as possible.

The closure comes amid growing concerns over school security across several parts of Nigeria, where threats of kidnappings and attacks on educational institutions continue to challenge authorities and local communities.
