Police Detain Ekiti Sergeant After Viral Video Shows Officer Acting Erratically in Public
The Nigeria Police Force has detained a police sergeant in Ekiti State after a disturbing viral video showed the officer behaving irrationally while dressed in full police camouflage uniform.
The footage, which spread rapidly across social media over the weekend, sparked widespread concern and criticism as viewers alleged the officer appeared to be under the influence of an illicit substance while in public.
Police authorities confirmed on Monday that the officer, attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Division, had been identified, located and taken into custody following the public backlash generated by the video.
In a statement shared on X by the Police Force New Media Officer, Aliyu Giwa, the force said immediate action was taken once the incident came to its attention.
“The incident was identified, the officer was located, and prompt action was taken,” the statement said, adding that the officer is currently stable but remains under investigation.
The Ekiti State Police Command also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, ordered a comprehensive psychological and medical evaluation of the sergeant before any disciplinary measures are concluded.
Authorities stressed that the matter would not be treated lightly, insisting that the conduct displayed in the video does not reflect the standards expected within the Nigeria Police Force.
“What was seen in that video does not represent the Nigeria Police Force. It does not reflect its standards, its values, or the discipline this institution demands from every officer in uniform. Such behavior will not be excused,” the statement added.
Police officials further explained that accountability in the case would involve not only disciplinary procedures but also efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding the officer’s behaviour.
The force also praised members of the public for drawing attention to the incident, noting that citizen reports continue to play an important role in monitoring misconduct and ensuring swift response from authorities.
The incident has once again reignited conversations around mental health, substance abuse, welfare concerns and disciplinary standards within Nigeria’s security agencies, particularly as viral social media footage increasingly exposes troubling behaviour among some personnel.
