A fierce political showdown is unfolding in Imo State as the race for the Imo West (Orlu Zone) senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections draws in some of the state’s most powerful figures.

At the centre of the contest is Governor Hope Uzodimma, whose reported emergence as a preferred consensus candidate within the All Progressives Congress has triggered resistance from key stakeholders.

Rather than unify the party, the move has exposed deep cracks, with several influential politicians rejecting the idea of a predetermined candidate and opting to test their strength at the primaries.

Among the most significant challengers is former governor Rochas Okorocha, whose entry into the race is widely seen as a direct challenge to Uzodimma’s dominance in the Orlu zone.

Insiders say the battle goes beyond electoral ambition, pointing to unresolved rivalries and longstanding grievances within the APC as major drivers of the escalating tension.

“There are deeper issues here. Many stakeholders feel sidelined, and this contest is becoming a platform to push back,” a source familiar with the developments said.

The situation is further complicated by the position of incumbent senator Osita Izunaso, who had initially shown interest in seeking another term but is now believed to be reconsidering his stance if the governor formally joins the race.

Adding another layer to the contest is Ifeanyi Ararume, whose reported acquisition of nomination forms signals the likelihood of a high-stakes and potentially divisive primary within the APC.

While the ruling party grapples with internal tensions, the Peoples Democratic Party is also witnessing increased activity, with multiple aspirants positioning themselves across the state’s senatorial zones.

Names such as Jones Onyeariri, Mike Ejiogu, Eze Madumere, and Dammes Nwokie have emerged in the PDP’s calculations, highlighting a broader surge in political ambition across party lines.

Officials from both parties confirm that interest remains high, with nomination form sales still ongoing and more aspirants expected to join the race before deadlines close.

Analysts warn that the push for consensus within the APC may have backfired, turning what could have been a controlled transition into a full-scale internal contest.

With heavyweight contenders digging in and alliances shifting, the battle for the Orlu Senate seat is shaping into a defining political fight—one that could redraw power dynamics in Imo State and test the APC’s internal cohesion ahead of 2027.
