A routine security response turned deadly in Imo State after troops of the Nigerian Army were ambushed by suspected gunmen in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area.
The attack, involving personnel from the 34 Artillery Brigade, occurred along the SPDC–Etekuru road while the soldiers were responding to a security alert linked to a burnt vehicle.
According to security sources, the troops came under heavy gunfire almost immediately after arriving at the scene, triggering a fierce exchange with the attackers.
One soldier was killed during the ambush, while another sustained injuries and was evacuated for medical attention.
The assailants reportedly fled the area after the confrontation, making away with two AK-47 rifles and leaving behind a partially damaged military vehicle.
Reinforcements were quickly deployed to the area, forcing the gunmen to retreat and preventing further casualties.
Subsequent operations at the scene uncovered two burnt vehicles as well as two bodies, which were later evacuated to a morgue for further investigation.
Security operatives have since intensified search efforts across the area, combing nearby communities and surrounding routes in a bid to track down those responsible.
The incident highlights ongoing security challenges in parts of Imo State, where attacks on security personnel and infrastructure have raised concerns among residents.
Authorities say operations will continue until the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
