The Kano State Police Command has arrested two suspects over the killing of popular political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Danshagamu, who was allegedly attacked at his residence in Gaida Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area.
The incident happened at about 11:30pm on Monday after the police received a distress call from the commander of the Gaida Vigilante Group. The caller reported that unidentified men had allegedly forced their way into Danshagamu’s home and attacked him with sharp objects.
Police officers from the Kumbotso Division responded to the scene and took the victim to Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital in Kano. He was, however, confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor.
The killing has sparked condemnation from opposition politicians, rights advocates and political groups. Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, said Danshagamu’s body was found in a pool of blood at his residence and described the incident as a “horrific attack”.
Kwankwaso called on the Kano State Government to establish an investigative panel to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Amnesty International Nigeria also condemned the incident, saying critics and outspoken citizens must be protected in a democratic society.
The Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Husaini Mai Riga, described the killing as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable”, warning that it raised concerns about public safety, press freedom and democratic values in the state.
The police said the two suspects were arrested following an intelligence-led operation carried out by the Kumbotso Divisional Police Officer, working with tactical units and community stakeholders. The suspects remain in custody and are being interrogated, while investigators are working to identify anyone else linked to the crime.
Police spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, speaking on behalf of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, said statements were being obtained from relevant individuals and forensic procedures were underway to establish the circumstances and possible motive behind the attack. The command has also increased patrols and intelligence-gathering activities around Gaida and neighbouring communities.
The commissioner expressed sympathy to Danshagamu’s family and assured residents that the investigation would be pursued to its conclusion. Police urged members of the public to remain vigilant and share credible information through nearby police stations or the command’s emergency lines. The suspects are expected to be charged in court after the investigation is completed.
