Veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has shed light on the crippling cost of electricity in Nigeria, revealing that he spends as much as ₦40,000 daily to power his home. The disclosure came during a candid interview with Africa Independent Television (AIT), where the actor highlighted the heavy financial burden imposed by the country’s unstable electricity supply.
According to Edochie, maintaining a household in Nigeria has become prohibitively expensive due to the high cost of electricity, diesel, and fuel. “I pay ten thousand naira for light every day in my house. Then I spend additional thirty thousand; twenty for diesel, ten for fuel. On the whole I spend forty thousand every single day on light. It disturbs me a lot,” he explained.
Electricity Woes Force Nigerians to Rely on Generators
Despite his status as one of Nollywood’s most respected figures, Edochie expressed frustration at the reality many Nigerians face: unreliable electricity has forced households and businesses to depend on generators and fuel, driving daily living costs sharply higher.
The veteran actor also criticised political leaders for ignoring the hardships of ordinary citizens. “Nobody seems to be bothered about what is happening to the common man,” he said, reflecting on the disconnect between governance and the daily struggles of Nigerians.
Social Media Reacts to Edochie’s Revelation
The actor’s candid remarks have sparked widespread reactions online:
- @OBAF4U commented: “Daddy we are sorry your son chose the side of the oppressors. He must bear the expenses for reinforcing failure.”
- @042Duke added: “I’m spending 10k daily to power my shop and nothing less than 5k to power my house. Car is optional.”
- @valdonclint noted: “Electricity unit bill wan send me go village. This band A is not for the faint-hearted.”
Industry Peers Weigh In
Separately, actor Yemi Solade reflected on his early career in Nollywood, claiming he is Pete Edochie’s senior in acting experience despite Edochie celebrating his 78th birthday recently. Solade praised Edochie’s contributions to the industry while highlighting his own longstanding presence in Nigerian cinema.
Edochie’s revelations underscore the ongoing challenges of energy supply in Nigeria, where many citizens continue to grapple with rising electricity costs, fuel dependency, and inadequate government attention to basic utilities.
