Social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, widely known as Peller, has declared that he will not return to Benin City despite being summoned by the Oba of Benin Palace, intensifying an ongoing dispute with the Benin Traditional Council.

The controversy follows his unauthorised entry into the palace on March 6, 2026, an act the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) described as a serious breach of protocol and a desecration of the sacred palace grounds.

Speaking during a livestream as part of his nationwide tour, Peller dismissed suggestions that he should send representatives in his place, insisting he would not involve his team in the matter.

A friend who appeared on the livestream indicated that the influencer considered sending his management to appear before palace authorities. However, Peller rejected the idea outright, saying he did not want any member of his team to be “held hostage.”

The BTC, in a statement signed by its Secretary, Frank Irabor, said disciplinary actions had already been taken against individuals linked to the incident. A palace chief reportedly involved has been suspended indefinitely, while a palace staff member, Mr Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force and charged in court for allegedly causing a breach of peace.

The council also confirmed that a queen connected to the incident is facing internal disciplinary proceedings, which could lead to her removal from the palace in line with Benin traditions.

Peller was earlier invited to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain his actions but has reportedly failed to honour the invitation. The council insists he must present himself and submit a written apology for the incident, warning that legal action may follow if he continues to disregard the summons.

The Benin Traditional Council emphasised that the palace is a deeply sacred institution guided by long-standing customs, adding that it remains committed to protecting the dignity and sanctity of the Oba of Benin and the royal institution.
