The electorate in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is set to cast votes on Saturday, February 21, 2025, for chairmen and councillors across six area councils: Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali.
The polls offer a major test for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), backed by a coalition of prominent opposition politicians, against the dominant All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
ADC’s campaign has seen heavy involvement from national figures, including Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, urging residents to vote for their candidates. AMAC chairmanship aspirant, Dr. Moses Paul, described his candidacy as the result of years of grassroots engagement.
“Preparation for leadership does not begin a few days before an election. For years, I have walked these streets and listened to the people. I am fully prepared to serve from day one,” Paul said.
He stressed that his priority is accountable governance and cooperation with lawful authorities, including the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, if elected.
Residents across markets and neighborhoods voiced expectations for practical leadership. Aisha Abdulkadir, a trader in Bwari, expressed frustration with politicians who disappear after campaigns, while Joy Okon, a provision seller, emphasized the need for competence over political ambition. Others highlighted demands for infrastructure, water, and security over slogans.
Security measures have been heightened ahead of the election. The FCT Police Command announced a 12-hour restriction of movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to ensure smooth voting.
The elections have also seen political realignments. Minister Wike, campaigning for APC candidates, has influenced two PDP aspirants—Julius Adamu (Bwari) and Hon. Zadna Dantani (AMAC)—to withdraw in favor of APC contenders, consolidating the APC’s position in some councils.
As voters prepare to head to the polls, residents hope for credible and transparent elections that deliver effective governance across the FCT.
