Lagos traffic officials arrest tanker driver as authorities blame one-way violation for deadly crash in Epe.
A tragic road accident along the Epe–Ijebu Road in Lagos has left two people dead after a petrol tanker collided with a commercial motorcycle on Wednesday.
The crash occurred at Pokia Junction, inward Araga, in the Epe area of the state, when an empty tanker rammed into a motorcycle carrying a rider and a male passenger. Both victims were confirmed dead at the scene.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) promptly arrested the tanker driver and handed him over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation.
Confirming the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said preliminary findings pointed to a serious traffic violation by the motorcyclist. According to him, the rider was travelling against traffic on a restricted one-way route while conveying a passenger.
“The commercial motorcyclist was driving on a prohibited route in violation of traffic laws when he was struck by the tanker,” Bakare-Oki said, adding that the impact resulted in fatal injuries to both occupants of the motorcycle.
LASTMA officers were said to have swiftly secured the crash site to prevent secondary accidents and ease traffic congestion along the busy corridor.
The bodies of the deceased, alongside the detained tanker driver, were later handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police from the Noforija Police Division for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
The incident has renewed concerns over persistent traffic violations and road safety challenges on Lagos highways, particularly involving commercial motorcycles and heavy-duty vehicles.
