Imo State Police have arrested two men for possession of large quantities of prohibited fireworks and explosive devices, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The suspects, 35-year-old Opara Evans and 29-year-old Chinedum Stanley, were apprehended during a targeted surveillance operation around Alaba and Relief markets in Owerri.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Henry Okoye, the state police spokesperson, reiterated that all forms of fireworks, knockouts, bangers, and other explosive devices remain banned across Imo’s 27 local government areas. Those caught violating the ban face arrest and prosecution.

Okoye said the recovered items were confiscated following a deliberate intelligence-led operation, highlighting the state’s zero-tolerance approach to unlawful explosives ahead of the festive season. He urged parents, residents, and traders to comply with the regulations and report suspicious activities to security agencies.

Meanwhile, Bauchi State Police announced the arrest of a suspected drug dealer, Ogbu Simon, after seizing illicit narcotics valued at over ₦12.2 million. The substances, reportedly Tramadol and Diazepam tablets known as “Yellow Voice,” were allegedly being distributed from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Ningi and surrounding communities.

Bauchi police spokesperson CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil said the arrest followed a tip-off received on 26 November, prompting detectives from the Ningi Divisional Police Headquarters, led by CSP Surajo Ibrahim Birnin Kudu, to carry out a swift raid. Four large bags of the controlled substances were recovered during the operation.

Authorities in both states emphasized the need for vigilance and community cooperation in enforcing bans on explosives and illegal drugs. Police assured residents that investigations would continue and urged anyone with credible information to report promptly.
